sketching at the marina (on the canal)











After teaching this morning I decided to make a start on my project and do some sketching at this marina on the canal. It's only a couple of miles from where I teach.

These were done in an 11 inch square sketchbook, the first with the Lyra skintones set of coloured pencils and the second started off to be a pen and ink sketch with a Rotring pen - but I wanted colour, so I finished it with coloured pencils.

I was there for a couple of hours and it was lovely to sit in the sunshine and enjoy the warmth. A lovely friendly lady brought me a leaflet on the history of the marina.

It was a originally a wharf of warehouses for goods brought in by the narrowboats, then a woodyard, then a marina for a boat hire firm and finally they've revamped the warehouse and made them into these des res apartments.

The marina was buzzing with owners working on their boats - a few chatted to me, others left me alone.




















The nearby Grand Union Canal goes all the way to London and this canal was built to connect with it - it's a dead end, finishing here. To get here, boats have to go up a flight of 14 locks at Foxton, to raise them up the hill to the wharf.

They aren't fantastic sketches but it's got the project underway :) I couldn't take oil paints as I was in work clothes - and I'm a very messy worker :(

I do love this top one with that wonderful house and I think that long thin landscape (canalscape?) format will be great. You have made me keen to take my little stool out into the streets. I might wait until the trail bike rally is over though ;)

yes, do avoid those bikes!

I found some very old sketches I'd done along the canal in 1995 - I'll post the pen and ink sketch of a quirky little factory building.

paint or sketch trees: challenge

playing with watercolours and coloured pencils

This is a page of watercolour studies of pansies, not intended to be 'a painting', I did a while ago that I came across. It's a grey rainy day and the light isn't good to get on with the canvasses so I decided to try to pull it together as a composition. I used a bit more watercolour and coloured pencils and cropped it and added the soft blue green background to cool it down a little - the colours felt too hot. The deep dark pansies were really velvety and intense and maybe not the colour scheme I would have set out to use with the orange and pale yellows - but the background helps to knit them together. Bringing the soft mauves into the darker flowers also helped. I also took another look at a mixed media woodland that was unfinished and worked a little more on that. It has a little oil pastel in the early stages, watercolour and then coloured pencils.
